In 1822 a town was laid out across the river and named for Senator Nathaniel Macon, a North Carolina agrarian legislator; it annexed Newtown in 1829. The economy grew rapidly after the railroad reached the city in the early 1840s, and Macon became an important cotton-shipping point.
