According to StatCounter, the share of desktop versions of Linux reached 4.5%, 4.56% to be precise in August 2024. Just a year ago this number reached the point of 3%. At this rate, Linux will reach 5% by February 2025.It took Linux over 3 decades to achieve this result, created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds when he was 21 and was studying in Helsinki University. The operating system continues to gain importance and popularity, being installed on billions of computers all over the world. It is a major operating system on servers, and is besides that used on a broad variety of devices, from microcontrollers to supercomputers, being the preferred choice for its stability and flexibility.#VPS #server #Linux #Linus #program

The Hot Chips 2024 conference was held in Palo Alto, where IBM unveiled a new processor and AI accelerator. The innovative products were designed mainly for enterprise applications and performance improvements for AI tasks. The new IBM Telum II processor has 8 cores at 5.5 GHz and operates on 5-nanometer technology. The processor is equipped with the latest AI accelerator and data processing unit (DPU).The main purpose of creating the latest processor was to improve performance, if compared to previous models. Telum II will have 4 times higher computing power, which will be - 24 TOPS. The accelerator architecture is fully optimized to work with a variety of AI models and large language models. The INT8 data type will also be supported, which will significantly impact the computational capabilities of the processor. The overall performance of Telum II will be able to reach 192 TOPS, such performance became possible due to more efficient load balancing between 8 AI accelerators in the module. The new Spyre accelerator will have 32 cores, similar to those in the Telum II. It will be possible to connect multiple powerful accelerators to the I/O subsystem to accelerate AI tasks. Both of these latest products are mainly focused on different scenarios of using artificial intelligence, and they are scheduled for release in 2025.#VPS #server #IBM #CPU #Chips

To accommodate the new realities of the modern world where the role of AI grows exponentially, there is a data center construction boom going on currently in the US.The US-regions known for accommodation of data centers have increased by 70%, reaching a record 3.87 GW. Meanwhile, there are 463 MW of new data center capacities being built in Austin and San-Antonio in Texas, which is more than four times higher than last year's figures. The lack of necessary power supply is the only factor that hampers the growth of data centers. However, only 20% of the new capacities will be accessible to ordinary users, while 80% are already reserved by hyperscalers, cloud providers and data center operators leasing AI accelerators. The lack of new data centers also leads to growing prices, although not so dramatically as last year, with a 7% increase in the first quarter of 2024, reaching $174/kW per month.Data center rental also continues to grow, in particular due to growing costs of construction, equipment, as well as the use of more resource-intensive AI-accelerators.According to CBRE, the capacity of data centers on key markets increased by 10% in the first half of 2024, while in last year there was a 1.1 GW of marches launched. The availability of capacities remains limited, with only 2.8% of resources free in the specified regions. In less popular regions such as Minneapolis, Houston or Denver there are, however, 10% of free capacities. There is also a shortage of transformers, switches and generators that is likely to continue for the next four years.According to CBRE, the construction costs of new data centers will only increase, due to increasing costs of power supply and equipment. Nevertheless, older data centers that are not suitable for AI-accelerators, may become on the contrary more affordable for ordinary users. #VPS #server #datacenter #CBRE

ARM, previously known for producing mobile processors, is preparing to release its own gaming graphics card. According to rumors, the company is preparing to compete with NVIDIA.The Israeli branch of ARM has hired about a hundred engineers to develop processors and software for them. It is expected that the development will be aimed at designing a GPU for consumers, in other words, a gaming GPU; it is possible that the final product could be used to solve AI tasks later. The company has not confirmed the rumors, so it is difficult to predict whether the GPU will be targeted at gaming PCs or ARM-based systems (laptops, smartphones, etc.), as well as whether it will be a discrete or embedded solution. From a technical point of view, ARM isn’t new to the GPU field. Previously, the company produced Immortalis and Mali mobile solutions, which are similar in functionality to desktop graphics cards. Nevertheless, there is no technical information about ARM’s GPUs, which indicates that the development is at an early stage.#ARM #GPU #NVIDIA #VPS

CHIP and Science Act made a decision to support the Korean semiconductor industry so the company will receive $450M for their construction needs. The fabrication and research building will be located in West Lafayette, Indiana. The funding for SK Hynix was given by the Commerce Department. This facility will mainly oriented on the production of the high-bandwidth memory chips that are extremely necessary for dealing with huge data volumes. The facility that has such a level of financial support will influence the whole industry through the production of really powerful chips. These chips are needed for Artificial Intelligence and high-performance computing purposes. As for some characteristics of the products, they can process almost 1.18 terabytes of information per sec.According to the plans of construction completion, the plant will start to function in 2028. In addition to the job opportunities that this construction will create in the area, the plan will offer an average of 1,000 new jobs once the construction is finished.Except for the direct funding, the Korean company also can get loans for $500M. #VPS #server #SKHynix #CPU

Every six months, the Rust project plans to update its task list, and a 26-item action plan has already been created for the 2nd half of 2024.Among the key goals on this list are to remove the main obstacles for the Linux kernel on Rust, to make the 4th release of the project, and to slightly change the experience of asynchronous Rust.A new version of Rust is planned for release by the end of this year. The main changes in the new release will concern modifications for the backup variant of type !, as well as support for async fn and impl Trait in traits, and the ability to add (async) generators using the gen keyword. According to the plan in the current year, the development of functions will be completed, and the already stable version 1.85 will be available at the beginning of 2025.Asynchronous closures are also scheduled to be developed, unstable functions will be handled, and a few other tasks are already planned. Here are a few more goals for further development of the project:- Plan to speed up compilation by almost 20 percent.- Stabilization of cargo-script so that it will be possible to embed dependencies for single file scripts.- To speed up testing time, “merged doctests” will be implemented.- Reference counting will be added to reduce data-handling efforts.- Improvement of Polonius support. If you want to see the entire list of goals for the next six months, you can go to the ...project-goals repository. The next phase of planning will be launched in early October.#Rust #VPS #server #Linux #devops

Although Intel has experienced some financial bottlenecks recently, they still dominate the global market of processors, holding around 70% of the market share for desktop PC, mobile devices, and data center processors. Nevertheless, the role of AMD on the market continues to increase as well.In particular, according to recent market analysis by Mercury Research, AMD is making major strides in the area of data center processors, while Intel still dominates in the client area. AMD’s data center processors gain ground against Intel’s offers, with this area being the most rapidly developing one of AMD. For instance, this year AMD won 5.6% of the market share relative to Intel, with general tendency of AMD winning around 1% each quarter.Nevertheless, Intel continues to dominate in other areas with 75,9% market share. In addition to that, Intel is more dominating when it comes to sales volumes, while AMD’s main source of revenues are its expensive AI accelerators, with both companies having earned almost the same $3 billion in the second quarter. According to AMD, its MI300 accelerators have earned $1 billion faster than anything else in the company’s history. The growth was a bit slower in the client sector, with desktop and mobile devices chips part growing up to 21.1% this years compared to Intel’s 78.9%.In the second quarter AMD lost 1% of the desktop processor market part, although their sales in this segment still grew by 3.6%. When it comes to laptops, AMD controls 20.3% of the market share, which grew by 3.8% since last year.#VPS #server #AMD #Intel #CPU
